Jason is building two bamboo-and-earth houses in Singkerta,
Bali, assisted by Indonesian bamboo expert Gandung from Banyuwangi,
East Java, who worked out the joinery and details. The two-story
houses use bamboo for the superstructure, windows, flooring,
joists, and even the doors and cupboards. "I'm using bamboo
because I want to do something for conservation," Jason
says. "Bamboo is a renewable resource that can take the
place of rainforest timbers. It produces more oxygen than any
other plant, prevents soil erosion, is edible, can be used
for building, and regenerates quickly, growing as much as a
meter per day." One house is completed and the second
is in progress.
